Recover lost tickets
Find saved messages and help members continue after a ticket channel is deleted.
If an open ticket channel is deleted, you can't restore that channel or create its normal closing transcript afterward. Start with the dashboard record: messages Modmail already logged remain available there.
Find the conversation you still have
Open Tickets and find the ticket. Review its messages and metadata, using Show edited, Show deleted, and Show internal when needed. You can also search message text.
| Conversation detail | Still available |
|---|---|
| Logged member messages, staff replies, internal notes, and ticket details | Yes |
| Dashboard search and the ticket's recorded history | Yes |
| The deleted Discord channel | No |
| An automatic HTML transcript that wasn't generated before deletion | No |
Yes YesNo No
Files or messages that existed only in the Discord channel might not be recoverable. A dashboard record covers what Modmail logged, not everything that could have existed in a deleted channel.
If the bot notices the deletion
Modmail can close the ticket quietly after its channel is deleted. It records the person who deleted it when that information is available. The member doesn't receive a closing message or rating request, and their next message starts a new ticket.
Check the previous conversation before answering in the new ticket so the member doesn't have to repeat context your team already has.
If the member still has a stuck ticket
When a member messages the bot and their open ticket has no working channel, Modmail can retire the old ticket and guide them through a fresh start. Their new message becomes the first message of the replacement ticket. The retired ticket stays in history as closed by the user, without a new transcript, goodbye message, or rating prompt.
If the reset fails, the bot asks the member to try again in a moment. Check Tickets for an open conversation without a working channel and resolve the stuck ticket before asking the member to try again. Recreating a channel with the same name doesn't restore the original conversation.
Avoid losing another channel
Use the normal closing flow before cleaning up Discord.
- Run
/modmail closein each finished ticket. - Wait for confirmation and check the transcript.
- Use Delete Channel on the confirmation.
Limit channel deletion permissions to staff who need them. Before a bulk
cleanup, compare the planned deletions with open tickets in the dashboard.
If you're unsure whether a channel is a live ticket, /modmail close
reports Ticket not found. when it isn't one.
Next steps
Review the transcript options, or return to the normal closing flow.
