Getting started

Create your bot

Create your Discord bot, connect it in the dashboard, and invite it to your server.

Your group is ready. Let's connect the Discord bot that will run your community's features. You'll create a Discord application, connect it through the AeroNexus dashboard, and invite the bot to your server. AeroNexus hosts it for you.

Your bot token is encrypted

AeroNexus encrypts bot tokens before storing them in its database using AES-256-GCM. Each bot's encryption key is derived with scrypt from a server-side master key. This protects the token after AeroNexus encrypts it. If you expose it before then, encryption can't undo the leak. Keep your token private.

A bot token is the key to your bot. Anyone who holds it can control your bot completely!

Never paste it anywhere except the AeroNexus dashboard, and reset it in the Developer Portal if it ever leaks.

If your developer also needs a bot token, create a separate Discord application and bot. Never use the same bot or token.

Read Security before continuing.

What you need

Have these ready before you start:

  • An AeroNexus group. If you haven't created one yet, follow Create your group.

  • Permission to add bots to your group's Discord server.

Start bot setup

After you create your group, the dashboard takes you straight to bot setup. Follow the on-screen tutorial and select Continue to move through the steps.

Your first bot uses the label Main bot. When creating additional bots, you can enter a Bot label to help your team recognize each one in the dashboard.

While you can create multiple bots, we currently recommend creating only one due to the current state of the dashboard.

Please note that creating and hosting multiple unnecessary (useless) bots may result in your account being terminated.

Create your Discord application

Your Discord application gives your bot its own identity. Create a dedicated application for the bot we will host:

  1. Open the Discord Developer Portal and select New Application.
  2. Enter your group name and select Create.
  3. Open Bot in the sidebar.
  4. Keep Public Bot enabled and Requires OAuth2 Code Grant disabled.
  5. Under Privileged Gateway Intents, enable Presence Intent, Server Members Intent, and Message Content Intent. Save your changes if prompted.
  6. Return to the AeroNexus dashboard and confirm that you've enabled all three intents when the tutorial asks.

If your developer needs a bot, create a separate application for them. Never share your AeroNexus bot's token. See Security.

Connect your bot token

The token lets AeroNexus sign in as your bot and run its features. Keep the dashboard open while you generate it:

  1. In the Developer Portal, open your application's Bot page and select Reset Token. Complete any confirmation Discord requests.
  2. Copy the token Discord shows you.
  3. Return to the AeroNexus dashboard and paste it into Bot token.
  4. Select Check token.

AeroNexus checks the token and shows your bot and selected Discord server. Confirm that both are correct before continuing.

Paste your token only into the AeroNexus dashboard. Never send it in a message or support ticket. If you expose it, reset it immediately. See Security.

Invite your bot to your server

Your bot needs to join the Discord server you selected when creating your group. To finish setup:

  1. Select Open Discord and invite this bot in the dashboard.
  2. In Discord, confirm the selected server and authorize the bot.
  3. Return to the dashboard and select Invited.

AeroNexus checks that the bot has joined the selected server.

Troubleshooting

If setup can't continue, use the dashboard's error message to identify what needs attention:

  • The token check fails: Copy the bot token from the correct application's Bot page. Don't use the application ID or OAuth2 client secret. If you reset the token, use the new one.
  • Required intents are missing: Enable all three privileged gateway intents on the application's Bot page, save your changes, and retry.
  • The token is already in use: Check whether you've already connected this bot. Create a separate Discord application for each additional bot.
  • The bot isn't in the selected server: Use the dashboard's invite button, confirm the server, and finish Discord's authorization. Wait a moment, then select Invited again.

Never include your bot token when sharing an error or asking for help, including when contacting AeroNexus. See Security.
