Configure your bot
Choose your bot's servers, enable commands, and update its Discord profile.
Use your bot's settings to choose where it works, which slash commands people can use, and how it appears in Discord. Open Bots, choose your group, and open the bot you want to configure. Dashboard links in this guide let you choose your group and bot when needed.
Choose your bot's servers
Open Servers to see the Discord servers your bot has joined.
- Whitelisted servers have an assigned role for this bot.
- Unwhitelisted servers don't have one yet.
You can assign a Main server, Staff server, and Support server; each slot holds one server at a time.
Assign (whitelist) a server
- Open Servers for your bot.
- If the bot hasn't joined the server, select Add to server, authorize the invite in Discord, and return to the dashboard.
- Find the server under Unwhitelisted and select Whitelist.
- In Choose where this server belongs, select the slot you want to use.
- If another server already uses that slot, review the confirmation and select Replace server.
The server appears under Whitelisted with its assigned role. Server changes apply without a separate save step.
Remove a server assignment
Use Unwhitelist when you want to remove a server's assignment while keeping the bot in that Discord server. Review the confirmation, then select Remove whitelist.
Use Leave when you want the bot to leave the Discord server instead. Confirm with Leave server. To bring it back later, invite it again with Add to server.
Leave all makes the bot leave every unwhitelisted server in the list. Whitelisted servers stay connected. Review the list before confirming.
Choose your slash commands
Open Commands to turn individual slash commands on or off. Feature sections appear when the corresponding feature is enabled for your bot. Use the slash command reference to find a command's purpose and its guide.
To update the available commands:
- Open Commands for your bot.
- Turn each command on or off as needed.
- Select Save Changes.
- Wait for confirmation that the commands are saved and deployed to Discord.
- If Discord still shows the previous command list, reload Discord.
Select Reset before saving to discard your unsaved changes. If the dashboard says deployment is still pending, wait for it to finish before checking the command list again.
Turning off a Modmail slash command doesn't turn off its text-command equivalent. Staff can still use the text commands listed on Commands inside ticket channels.
Update your bot's profile
Open Customization to edit your bot's Discord profile. The preview updates as you make changes; select Save Changes to apply them. Your bot must be online for profile changes to succeed. If it isn't, follow Troubleshoot your bot.
To update the profile:
- Select the bot's name, custom status, or bio to edit it.
- Select Change picture or Change banner to upload an image. Use PNG, JPG, GIF, or WebP, and keep each file under 10 MB.
- Optional: Select the presence indicator to choose Online, Idle, or Do not disturb.
- Review the preview and select Save Changes.
The name has a limit of 32 characters, the custom status has a limit of 128, and the bio has a limit of 400. Select Reset to discard unsaved edits.
Publish announcements automatically
The Announcement publishing section on Customization controls what happens to new messages in Discord announcement channels. These switches save separately from the profile editor.
To change announcement publishing:
- Turn Publish announcements automatically on or off.
- If publishing is on, optionally turn on React with a check to add a brief confirmation reaction after a message is published.
- Wait for the saved confirmation beneath the switches.
If your bot is offline, the dashboard can save these settings for when it comes back online.
Next steps
With the bot configured, set up the features your community needs:
- Set up Modmail to manage support conversations.
- Create a dashboard role to give trusted staff access to the dashboard.
- Troubleshoot your bot if commands or profile updates don't work.
