Placeholders and testing

When messages don't arrive

Find and fix missing join, leave, and boost messages.

If a welcome, farewell, or boost message doesn't appear, check that the bot is online, the message matches the event, and the destination is available. Use a simulation after each fix to see whether your saved messages arrive.

Check the feature and server

Start with the settings that affect every message.

  1. Open your group and bot in the dashboard, then select Welcome Messages. Confirm the Welcome Messages switch is on. Turning it off pauses all join, leave, and boost messages.
  2. Confirm the bot is online. Start it if needed, and follow any connection instructions shown in the dashboard.
  3. Check that the event happened in a linked main, staff, or support server. Events in other servers don't send Welcome Messages.

Check which messages match

A saved message sends only for the servers and events you've chosen. Open the message and check the settings that apply to its destination.

  • Channel messages: The event must happen in the same server as the destination channel. A channel in your main server won't receive a message about someone joining your support server.
  • Direct messages: Check that the server where the event happened is selected under the message's source servers.
  • Joins by bots: Turn on Include bot accounts if you want a greeting when another bot joins.
  • Boost messages: Check that Send when matches the boost you want to celebrate: a member starting to boost or every boost.
  • Leave messages: Look in the destination channel. Farewells are channel-only and never arrive as DMs.

Check the destination

If the message matches the event, check whether the bot can send it.

For a channel message, confirm that the channel still exists and the bot can view it and send messages there. If you've changed channel or category permissions, check the bot's access again.

For a direct message, the member must be able to receive DMs from the bot. Members who block server DMs may not receive the greeting. Other messages for the same event can still be sent.

A failed message doesn't stop the others. For example, closed DMs don't prevent a channel greeting, and one deleted channel doesn't prevent messages in other channels. Matching messages are attempted in the order you've arranged them.

Verify with a simulation

Save any changes, then test the same kind of message and server.

  1. Open Simulation under Welcome Messages.
  2. Under Test server, choose the server where you expected the message.
  3. Select Simulate join, Simulate leave, or Simulate boost.
  4. Read the result banner and check Discord for the delivered messages.

Use the result to choose your next check:

ResultNext check
Simulation completeAll matching messages were sent to the test destinations. Check the delivered wording and layout.
Nothing was sentCheck that you've saved a message of this kind and that its destination or source servers match the test server.
Simulation partly completed or Messages couldn't be sentCheck the destination and permissions for each missing message. For DMs, check your own Discord privacy settings.
Simulation failedFollow the reason shown in the banner, such as starting the bot or joining the selected server with your signed-in account.

A successful simulation tests your account. A real member with different DM settings may still be unable to receive a greeting.

If placeholders appear as text

A message that arrives with text such as {{user.usrename}} has a placeholder problem rather than a delivery problem. Compare it with the placeholder reference, correct the spelling or choose a supported placeholder, save, and test again.

Some supported placeholders also stay visible when the detail isn't available. For example, a member may not have a server nickname. Use {{user.display}} for a greeting that needs a readable name.

Next steps

Review choosing destinations if the message matches the wrong server, or follow preview with simulation for a full test walkthrough.
